Hyper Japan - Geisha Makeup

the white people gawking make me really uncomfortable

Me too! The whole setup made me cringe.. They looked like animals in a zoo..

Apparently Sayuki opened a district in Hokkaido! Lmao

lol sayuki opened a district? Where did you hear this

it just keeps getting better omg

Here ya go http://metro.co.uk/2013/07/25/meet-sayuki-the-worlds-first-western-geisha-3897452/

In summary: she opened her own okiya in Yanaka, Tokyo (I assume it’s the one called Yanakaya?) The geisha working there are: Aya, Sayuki, Chiyomi, Sanami and Sanomi. Yes, she has two apprentices under her.) and a whole district in Niseko, Hokkaido with only three working geisha who, btw, aren’t locals. But she expects a local girl to become a geisha soon too.

I bet it will get better soon, lmao

After seeing you posted about this I went to IG forums immediatelly and…. I will just copy someone else’s response here as an illustration:

believe me, this was my reaction too XD

When I read articles about her all I see is ‘first white this’,’first white to do so and so in Japan’ etc. I sure would love to hear some followers’ opinions on this though!

Oh yeah! She’s so obnoxious I just can’t process it. And what’s with her being in oshiroi? I’m sure she’s above 30 but her in a regular kimono will blend her in the crowd and she obviously can’t handle it because in the western eyes unless you paint your face white you’re not a geisha

Whether she wants to appear in oshiroi or not is a minor issue to me… Maybe I’m not at the point to say this - but I think this is some big ass white savior complex example.
