I read Geisha: A Life. the author called the head of her house "aunty" and another woman "mother". It this common in the Geisha community? That is a woman deferring authority to another? Yeah it’s quite common because sometime a “mother”/okasan cannot handle the okiya herself so she have someone for help probably know as the “aunty” but the “mother” stay as her “mother” position you understand?
