GeiMaiko follow a strict order of seniority when walking together and when the most senior geiko enters a place the younger ones scurry to hold the noren for her... Could you please explain the details of this process?

It’s exactly as you said. The most junior are expected to do the chores and help out those who are more senior than them. This includes opening noren, organizing shoes, carrying bags and umbrellas, and anything else their onesan may need to make their lives easier. Even today imoto are supposed to visit their onesan on a daily basis and help tidy up their places. Cleaning is considered part of training as it allows a person to clean their physical space and their minds.
