Hello Nox Lumiere! Yes, I know a few titles:
1. Sisters of the Gion/祇園の姉妹 by Kenji Mizoguchi (1936)
2. A Geisha/祇園囃子 by Kenji Mizoguchi (1953)
3. Sisters of the Gion/祇園の姉妹 by Hiromasa Nomura (1956) Remake of the 1936 movie
4. The Geisha/陽暉楼 by Hideo Gosha (1983)
5. American Geisha by Lee Philips (1986)
6. Maiko-haaaan!!!/舞妓Haaaan!!! by Nobuo Mizuta (2007)
7. Lady Maiko/舞妓はレディ by Masayuki Suo (2014) Musical
Of those 7, I’ve watched: A Geisha (about a girl is aspiring to be a Maiko in Gion Kobu and her Onesan)
The Geisha (family drama, Yakuza, brothels… is it an accurate depiction of Hanamachi life in the 1930′s? I don’t know, but I found it very entertaining)
American Geisha (sort of based on “Geisha” by Liza Dalby. Saw it only once a couple of years ago. IIRC, it looked nice, but the story was rather obscure).
If you like documentaries, I would also recommend you to keep an eye on NHK’s program, as they feature persons who work in the Hanamachi now and then (example: a 50 minute documentation about the Okami of the Gion Kobu Ochaya Tomiyo, “Shinbashi: Life in Buildings” featuring Shinbashi Geisha, various episodes of “seasoning the seasons” featuring Geisha from Kyoko and Kanazawa, etc….). Another documentary I’d like to watch some day is "The Last Geisha Madame Minako”/ みな子姐さん:最後の吉原芸者 by Makoto Yasuhara (~2010) being about the last Geisha in Tokyo-Yoshiwara
Where you can find some? I watched the three mentioned above on Youtube, but they’ve been deleted meanwhile. If you’re looking for DVDs, I think Amazon is always a safe choice. I checked Amazon.com for Maiko-han and Lady Maiko, both movies are available, but pretty expensive IMO.
